Remember, remember the 5th of November,

Gunpowder, treason, and plot,

I know of no reason, why the gunpowder treason,

Should ever be forgot

Recipe Video:

If you’re not in Britain, or one of the common wealths (is that the correct term?), then you might not be all that familiar with Bonfire Night. Also known as Guy Fawkes Night or Fireworks Night, it is a British holiday on 5th November where we celebrate a failed plot to blow up the Houses of Parliament by the Catholics, who wanted to kill King James I and oust his government because they were Protestant (that’s a very, very basic description of the events – some of which may even be wrong!). It was foiled when Guy Fawkes was discovered guarding all the gunpowder in the tunnels beneath. So, naturally, we celebrate his capture and gruesome execution by setting off fireworks and burning an effigy of Guy on a bonfire – because that’s a totally normal thing to do! It may have a slightly odd reason behind it, but Guy Fawkes Night is always such a fun celebration – you wrap up warm to watch pretty fireworks, eat fairground style food, and just have a generally good time!

It’s my birthday!! Yay! Today I turn 21 *ahem* plus 10 years *ahem*!

I was not particularly thrilled about turning 30 last year, but this last year turned out to be pretty awesome. I started a new job, some really awesome new people came into my life, I moved to a really gorgeous area of London, and I’ve baked some delicious treats and mixed some amazing cocktails. That’s a pretty good year by my books!

Pancake Day, Shrove Tuesday, Mardi Gras… whatever you call it, it’s a day celebrated and marked across the world. It comes the day before Ash Wednesday, the day that Lent starts, and this year it falls in February 28th – this coming Tuesday. Traditionally it’s the day you get ready for fasting by using up all your staples in your kitchen and one last chance to gorge on what you will be giving up for Lent. In the UK, we traditionally have pancakes because it’s a simple way to use up eggs, flour and sugar – hence why we call it “Pancake Day”. Of course, it’s not entirely necessary these days as most people don’t fully fast for Lent, rather we just give up one of our vices, but traditions are still fun to have right?

Happy Mother’s Day to all the mothers in the UK! Don’t panic my lovely US people, our Mother’s Day falls in a completely different month to yours. But in the UK, today is a day to celebrate the wonderful mothers, grandmothers and mother-figures in our lives – those wonderful women that support us, love us and care for us unconditionally. I consider myself extremely lucky to have an amazing mum who I would be lost without, so this recipe is dedicated to her and was made for her. Because is there a better way to say “Thank you” than delicious cupcakes? Perhaps cupcakes topped with frosting flavoured with her favourite bubbly!

Peach Cupcakes with Cinnamon Frosting by Giraffes Can Bake - Moist peach cupcakes with a spiced peach filling, topped with a creamy and delicious Cinnamon frosting. You can used canned peaches, so you can enjoy these amazing cupcakes all year round!I don’t think cupcakes are as trendy as they once were. Not so long ago you’d blink and a dozen new cupcake businesses had popped up, cupcakes were the in thing! Personally, I love a good trend, especially when it’s something as awesome as cupcakes! The trend may have died down now, but my love for cupcakes definitely hasn’t. I mean, what’s not to love? It’s basically an excuse to eat an entire cake and not have your family look at you like you’re dishonouring their name. And they’re so versatile too, with limitless designs and flavour combinations, you’re spoilt for choice! I think cupcakes get a bit of a bad rep to be honest, but I think people who look down on cupcakes just don’t know how to appreciate joy 😉
