Hold on to your knickers, loves! Giraffes Can Bake has a healthy recipe for you! Whaaaa?! Don’t worry, this is still your best source for indulgent desserts, but whilst buttery cakes and boozy cocktails may be my forte, even I need a healthy dose of vitamins every now in then! In fact, despite all the delicious treats I make and share with you, I actually try and eat quite healthily in my day to day life. I certainly don’t deny myself indulgent, tasty treats like the ones I share here (I mean, somebody has to taste test the recipes!) – I’m big believer in everything in moderation. So I’ll try to eat healthy and nutritious meals for breakfast, lunch, and dinner, and then treat myself to a glass of wine and a slice or two of cake in the evenings. Sometimes, the indulgent side of the scale will heavily outweigh the healthy side, but I’m okay with that!

If you follow me on instagram , you may have seen that I started a diet this week (or a “lifestyle change” as my BFF would make me say!) and that diet is Weight Watchers. I did it last year and lost over 30lbs, which was pretty awesome (and my BFF has lost 53lb and counting since September ’16!!). I didn’t get to my goal weight though and I kind of fell off track, and I’ve put about 5lb of that weight back on. Which isn’t really a big deal, I’m not all that unhappy with my weight. However, I do want to eat healthier and not put so much processed crap in my body, and losing a little weight would be nice too!

Y’all, I love donuts. Is there anybody who doesn’t love donuts. And look, I love cutting down on some calories with baked donuts as much as the next guy but if I’m having a serious donut craving it’s gotta be deep fried or it just won’t cut it. Since developing a gluten intolerance, real fried donuts have felt pretty much off limits. I mean, how often do you see gluten free donuts in a bakery? And adding the gluten free challenge to the yeast beast? Gah, scary, right?! Well, that’s what I thought.  But I’m happy to admit I was very wrong!

Pancake Day, Shrove Tuesday, Mardi Gras… whatever you call it, it’s a day celebrated and marked across the world. It comes the day before Ash Wednesday, the day that Lent starts, and this year it falls in February 28th – this coming Tuesday. Traditionally it’s the day you get ready for fasting by using up all your staples in your kitchen and one last chance to gorge on what you will be giving up for Lent. In the UK, we traditionally have pancakes because it’s a simple way to use up eggs, flour and sugar – hence why we call it “Pancake Day”. Of course, it’s not entirely necessary these days as most people don’t fully fast for Lent, rather we just give up one of our vices, but traditions are still fun to have right?
