Are you a Valentine’s Day lover, or would you prefer to kick it to the curb this year? Whatever your feelings about this particular holiday, you’ll definitely want to be buying flowers and chocolate for The Scarlett Heart – it’s a Valentine’s Day Cocktail we’ll want to whisper sweet nothings too! The name of this Valentine’s Day Cocktail draws inspiration from the classic book and movie, Gone with the Wind. But, confession time – I’ve never actually seen the movie or read the book, but I have passed the Margaret Mitchell House many times, that counts right?! But as The Scarlett Heart combines some wonderful southern flavours and has a gorgeous red hue, a southern love story about a woman named Scarlett just seemed like the perfect place to draw inspiration from.
When it comes to cocktails I tend to prefer them bitter and sour, but for this Valentine’s Day Cocktail I thought a sweet touch would be perfect for the romantic time of year. Even more so if you’re feeling bitter and sour about Valentine’s Day 😀 Personally, I love the holiday – whether I’m single or in a relationship. You should, of course, show the people you love that you love them all throughout the year. But I can’t be mad about a holiday dedicated to love – even if it is usually marketed as a way to make us spend more money!
The Scarlett Heart is one of the best romantic cocktail recipes to serve this Valentine’s Day. It’s so easy to mix, giving you more time to snuggle with your boo, and it looks really impressive too. Since this Valentine’s Day cocktail is really quick and easy to prepare, it’s great for serving a crowd. It will go down really well at a Valentine’s Day cocktail party, put this on the menu and everyone will be happy – even those who are anti-valentine’s day!
This easy Valentine’s Day Cocktail is made with the southern favourites, bourbon and cola. It also has honey, maraschino liqueur, chocolate bitters, and the romantic secret ingredient – chocolate wine! I recently discovered chocolate wine when I went to the Ideal Home Food and Drink Festival, and it’s totally delicious I had to grab a bottle. And I will definitely be getting more. It’s made by a company called Rubis (no they are not paying me for this post, I just really love it!). The best part about it, is you can buy it in Aldi! You can also get it on Amazon if you don’t have an Aldi near you, it will just cost you a few extra pennies. I haven’t tested a substitute for if you can’t get your hands on chocolate wine yet, but it’s on my list of things to do and I will update this post as soon as I do – my first idea is to mix creme de cacao with a sweet red dessert wine, feel free to experiment and let me know how you get on!
Like I said, this romantic Valentine’s Day Cocktail is easy to make, all you have to do is mix all the ingredients except the chocolate wine, and pour over crushed ice. Then you just drizzle the chocolate wine on top.

Yield 2 Cocktails
An easy and delicious romantic Valentine's Day Cocktail you can make for you and your boo, share with friends, or serve at a party
Ingredients
- 3oz Bourbon
- 1/2 oz Clear honey (sub with agave to make it vegan)
- 1 oz Maraschino liqueur
- 3 dashes Chocolate bitters
- 2oz Cola
- 2oz Chocolate wine
- Crushed ice
Instructions
- Put the bourbon, honey, maraschino liqueur, and chocolate bitters in a mixing glass, and stir vigorously to combine (you could use a shaker, but stirring is better at combine the honey with the liquid - you also don't need a lot of air in this cocktail)
- Fill two rocks glasses with crushed ice, and pour the bourbon mixture over top (sharing evenly between the two glasses
- Pour over the cola (1oz per glass)
- Drizzle the chocolate wine over the top of the crushed ice - you can use the back of a spoon to help it sit on top if your crushed ice is under the liquid (1oz chocolate wine per glass)
- Serve immediately with cocktail straws
Notes
Double the recipe as needed to make more. Only make what you're going to drink at one time however, as the ice will melt too much.
I strongly recommend using good quality cola for the best taste (not those two famous brands that I shall not name), I favour Fever Tree cola. If all you have is regular famous brand cola that's okay, it will still be yummy. I also have a recipe for homemade cola here, which would be great!
