Mulberries are something that have always intrigued me. When we were little we would sing about dancing around a mulberry bush on a “cold and frosty morning”. In the myth of Pyramus and Thisbé, they meet (and later die) under a mulberry tree and that’s where the berries get their colour from (to memorialize their forbidden love or something vindictive and weird like that). So, do they grow on a bush that you dance around, or a tree that you have a violent death under? Who knows! (Probably botanists and people who can be bothered to use google). All I know is that I’d never actually tasted this sweet berry or seen them in real life. So my interest was piqued when I came across Mulberry Gin during a visit to Coughton Court (a National Trust site). I decided to snap up a small  bottle, despite being on a self-imposed ban on  buying any spirits or liqueurs for a month! Totally worth it, because this Mulberry Bramble Cocktail was born from it – and there ain’t nothing wrong with his baby!

A sweet and fruity homemade Blackberry Liqueur (also known as Crème de Mûre) that is so easy to make yourself with very little hands on time. The perfect way to use up all the blackberries the season has to offer! This easy homemade Blackberry Liqueur only gets better with time – so make up a big batch now to have the perfect homemade Christmas gifts on hand come December.

The Mulberry Bramble Cocktail is, of course, a little twist on the classic Bramble. A Bramble is a cocktail made using gin, lemon juice, and blackberry liqueur, it’s one of my favourite classics – you know I love me some blackberries! The Mulberry Bramble Cocktail was pretty much my first idea when thinking how I should use this mulberry gin, both being early autumn berries it made sense to put them together in one delicious cocktail. I of course had to taste test the mulberry gin first, and found it to be very sweet with after notes of the botanicals we all love in a regular gin – it would definitely make a perfect pair with blackberries!

Mulberries, it seems, are a much sweeter berry than the blackberry, but they do have a little tartness to them to balance out the flavour. With the sweetness of the blackberry liqueur (aka Crème de Mûre) and mulberry gin combined, fresh lemon juice in this Mulberry Bramble Cocktail is the perfect balancer. The traditional bramble recipe calls for sugar syrup to help balance the tartness of the juice, but with the additional mulberry gin I find that the Mulberry Bramble Cocktail really doesn’t need any added sweetness so I have left it out.

I’m definitely a big fan of mulberry gin and I wish I had bought a bigger bottle! I definitely recommend you pick some up if you ever see it or, even better, infuse your favourite gin with mulberries if you’re ever lucky enough to get your hands on some fresh mulberries! I hear they grow wildly in the UK in some places but I’ve never actually seen them myself, and I’ve certainly never seen them in the supermarket or in markets! If you’re not able to do either of those but you’re still loving the sound of this Mulberry Bramble Cocktail (I mean, why wouldn’t you), I suggest trying it with Sloe gin. Obviously it’s not going to be the same drink, but I found that mulberry gin and sloe gin have a very similar sweetness and deep flavour, and sloe gin would be delicious in this Mulberry Bramble Cocktail – although I guess then you’d have to call it a Sloe Bramble Cocktail!

I’m really loving you cocktail photos at the moment Michelle, and I soI want to try this drink. First I need to get hold of that Mulberry gin.

Also, I’ve just been using my shop bought Creme de Mure for a recipe and I can’t help but notice how much more vibrant your homemade version looks. So much more appetising.
