Marvel’s Elektra Cocktail {Blood Orange, Blackcurrant & Anise Mezcal Margarita }

A delicious and intense cocktail inspired by Marvel’s Elektra. She’ll kick your ass, and so will this cocktail! It’s a blood orange, blackcurrant and aniseed Mezcal Margarita, made with Mezcal instead of tequila. Followed by a Mezcal shot chaser! It’s certainly not one for the feint of heart!

This post is *Spoiler Free!* That means I will not give anything away for season 2 of the Netflix series of Marvel’s Daredevil.

Whether you’ve been watching Daredevil on Netflix or not, you can’t have missed all the talk about it! Season 2 recently aired and it seems like the whole world has been binge watching it, I know I did! Season 2 introduced a couple of new characters from the comics, one of them being Elektra. I promised this post would be spoiler free so I won’t go into much detail as to why, but I wasn’t that happy with how they handled her characterisation and story arc, so I decided to make a cocktail inspired by all her awesomeness and celebrate her character, in the form of a Mezcal Margarita

Steve Rogers aka Captain America’s cocktail in this series

One constant with Elektra’s character in the show is that when at a bar she always orders “Tequila, Mezcal if you have it” which is kind of a misnomer since tequila and mezcal are actually different drinks, but they’re similar enough that I’ll let them off! Mezcal is basically tequila’s older, more sophisticated sister. It has a smokier taste to it and is made from the maguey plant, a form of agave, native to Mexico. Like tequila, a bottle of Mezcal is not considered authentic unless it has an agave worm in it. Oaxaca, where most Mezcal is produced, have a saying “Para todo mal, mezcal, y para todo bien, también.” which translates to “For every ill, Mezcal, and for every good as well”. Oaxaca sounds like my kind of place. I think Elektra might like it too!

I used blood orange for the base flavour in this Mezcal Margarita, because it works well with the strong, smokey flavour of Mezcal but also because the colour and the name really works well for Elektra! Blackcurrant was used mostly for the colour, but the tangy flavour blends well with the aniseed, which was added to pay homage to fact that Elektra is actually Greek in the comics. I’m not sure what nationality she’s supposed to be in the series, she has a pretty nondescript European accent (to my ears anyway) and where she’s from isn’t really mentioned. The blackcurrant and aniseed mixture is suspended and swirled into the blood orange and mezcal part to create a fun effect that’s easy to acheive and gives it a great Daredevil look (think opening credits)!

This Mezcal Margarita is a STRONG cocktail, and it’s designed that way. I wanted you to be able to really taste the Mezcal through the other flavours, and you definitely can, plus Elektra wouldn’t settle for anything less. The Mezcal shot chaser is optional of course, but it adds an extra punch (just like Elektra would) and you take it in the traditional way, the same way tequila is taken. Salt, the shot and then a lime wedge. The bottle of Mezcal came with a little packet of a spicy salt mix, which is what I also used to rim the glasses with, but regular salt works too. This is actually a really easy cocktail to put together, but you will need to make the blood orange suspension mix a day in advance, as it needs to sit in the fridge overnight to thicken.

Before I get started with the recipe, I just want to say a massive thank you to Dini from The Flavor Bender for giving me so much help with the science side of this cocktail so I could get this awesome effect! Blood orange, blackcurrant and aniseed Margarita made with Mezcal and followed by a Mezcal shot chaser. A delicious and intense cocktail inspired by Marvel's Elektra.

Ingredients

For the blood orange mezcal suspension:

  • 3 shots of Mezcal (75ml)
  • 2 tbsp lime juice (about 1 lime)
  • 120ml blood orange juice (about 2 oranges)
  • 1/4 tsp xantham gum

For the blackcurrant aniseed mixture:

  • 100g blackcurrants, fresh or frozen (thawed if frozen)
  • 1/2 tsp anise seeds
  • 30ml cold water

To serve:

  • Salt
  • 2 shots of mezcal
  • 2 lime wedges
  • 2 shots of mezcal

Instructions

To make the blood orange suspension:

  1. Put the mezcal, blood orange juice and lime juice in a cocktail shaker and shake to combine. Pour into a blender and sprinkle the xantham gum over the top. Pulse in the blender in 20 second bursts, for about 2-3 minutes. Until fully combined and thickened.
  2. Chill covered in the fridge over night.

To make the blackcurrant aniseed mixture:

  1. Put the blackcurrants in a fine mesh sieve over a bowl, use the back of a spoon to crush the blackcurrants, getting all the juice out leaving the seeds and skin behind.
  2. Stir the anise seeds into the juice and add the water. Stir to combine. Leave to steep for at least 25 minutes. When ready to serve, strain to remove anise seeds.

To serve the cocktail:

  1. Run a lime wedge around the edge of two iced martini or margarita glasses. Dip the rims in salt.
  2. Divide the blood orange mixture into your two glasses
  3. Pour the blackcurrant mixture over the top, a little at a time, to create swirls where you want them.
  4. Pour two shots of mezcal. Once you have finished your cocktail, sprinkle some salt on your hand, lick it off, down your shot and suck on a lime wedge.

Notes

Enjoy responsibily.
Can be made with tequila also

I haven’t watched Daredevil yet, but now I plan on it! My husband and I love to spend a weekend binge watching Netflix. We call our adult children and let them know we are not available for babysitting – lol – we’re very busy, then we usually fix up some snack trays, have a few drinks and watch whatever show is at the top. This drink will now be on the top of our list to try.

I still need to start Daredevil! I loved Jessica Jones, and so I was told that I should watch Daredevil as well. Anyway, I am so interested in this cocktail, mezcal isn’t something I am familiar with, but that smoky flavor is calling my name!

You definitely do! If you loved JJ you will love DD – I should warn you though, DD is A LOT more bloody and violent (but kilgrave is way more scary than the villains in DD in my opinion).
Oh and if you like tequila you will definitely like mezcal, it’s very similar in taste, just with that awesome smokey taste.
